ALSC 101 at the ALA Annual Conference
As a first time attendee… I’m looking forward to the ALA Annual Conference here in Chicago in just a few short weeks! There has been so much energy and focus around this years event. One of the events I am particularly interested in and excited about is ALSC 101. In my few short weeks here at ALSC, it has been a rewarding experience working with colleagues and members of the Membership Committee to put this together. Making Connections… I think ALSC 101 is going to be perfect for those individuals who, like me, are looking to connect with people from across the country, learn more about ALSC, and have fun! How the ALSC Student Gift Membership Program Enlisted 100 New Members
Early one morning during ALA Annual 2015, some of the ALSC leadership including Andrew Medlar, Starr Latronica, and Aimee Strittmatter, were pondering the question of how they could grow membership in ALSC. They wondered, “If we offered gift memberships to students, would there be significant interest? What are the motivations for new graduates to join their professional organization?”

ALSC is pleased to announce a new program to offer a free, two-year membership for current and recent graduates of ALA-accredited Master of Library Science/Master of Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) programs.
Take the Membership Needs Survey, Win a Prize!
The ALSC Membership Committee announced the launch of the 2015 ALSC Membership Needs Assessment Survey. This survey is performed biennially and will assess: who ALSC members are how the division can best serve its members To encourage participation, the committee is offering participants the opportunity to be entered in a giveaway. Prizes include tickets to the 2015 Newbery-Caldecott-Wilder Banquet, an ALSC online course, a $50 ALA Store gift certificate, and award books. Winners will be notified by Friday, May 15, 2015. Participants must be personal members of ALSC. The survey is 25 questions and should take around ten minutes to complete. The deadline to submit the survey is 11:59pm Central on Friday, May 1, 2015. Reminder: #alsc14 Scholarship Applications Due May 30
In an effort to support ALSC’s goal of continuing education for children’s librarians, the Friends of ALSC are offering two scholarships to the ALSC National Institute Sept. 18 — 20, 2014 in Oakland, Calif. Scholarship recipients must be ALSC members who work directly with children in a library setting. The scholarships will include Institute registration (at the early bird rate) and a $1,000 travel stipend to cover airfare and hotel lodging. The ALSC National Institute, devoted solely to children’s and youth library services, offers a small, intimate setting for participating in programming and getting to know colleagues. Programs will delve into some of the most important topics in library service to children such as using technology in programming, what’s hot in children’s spaces, working with underserved populations and using local partnerships to improve programming. Participants are sure to go home feeling reinvigorated about the profession and more connected to others…
