The date and site for the highly-anticipated third convening of the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color was announced at the JCLC reception at Midwinter recently: it will take place September 26-30 2018 in Albuquerque NM.
The conference is convened by the Joint Council of Librarians of Color, Inc., a nonprofit organization that advocates for & addresses the common needs of the ethnic affiliate organizations of ALA, and is a coalition of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), the American Indian Library Association (AILA), the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and REFORMA: The National Association to Promote Library & Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking.
In a very unfortunate coincidence, the JCLC 2018 coincides with the ALSC Institute 2018, whose date and location were announced last September, and cannot be changed. The ALSC Institute will take place September 27-29 2018 in Cincinnati OH.
ALSC is committed to the learning & development of all of our members, and knows that you have much to gain from both conferences, so we encourage you to consider both. We welcome applications from members interested in representing ALSC at the JCLC 2018 to submit a proposal for an ALSC Roadshow, for which some funding may be available.
In today’s climate, as we all depend on each other even more to do the challenging work of cultivating an inclusive and accessible environment for children and their caregivers in libraries, our professional communities mean more than ever. I hate to bring the news that some members will be forced to choose one of these conferences over the other, and recognize at the same time that others of you might not have the means to attend either. Please know that we will continue to provide opportunities for us to teach and support each other in our work.
