Coming soon to your mailbox: The spring issue of Children and Libraries

Get ready for your spring issue of Children and Libraries which you will find in your mailbox in early May. Julie Cummins is the guest editor for this special issue celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Caldecott Medal. Julie is a recipient of the 2003 ALSC Distinguished Service Award. Her accomplishments in the field of librarianship include her leadership as the head of the Central Children’s Room at Rochester (N.Y.) Public Library and coordinator of children’s services at New York Public Library. She has served in numerous ALSC and ALA leadership positions; served as an editor, teacher, and consultant; and continues to write children’s books.

The Children and Libraries Editorial Advisory committee is thrilled about this special issue, and we’re sure you will be just as pleased! Here’s what’s in store:

• Author interviews with Brian Selznick and David Wiesner.

• Never before seen historical photos from past Newbery/Caldecott banquets as well as childhood photos of Caldecott winners.

• What does the Caldecott medal mean to an author, to children, to librarians? Scholars, editors and others share their perspectives on the medal.

• ALSC President Carolyn Brodie recalls her fondest Caldecott memories. After reading about her memories, share some of your own here in the comments. Did you save a recording of a speech? Did you save the special program? Do you have pictures to share?

• Have you ever wondered about the medal’s namesake, Randolph Caldecott?  Author and children’s literature historian Leonard Marcus writes about Caldecott — the illustrator, the author, and the man.

While you’re waiting for your issue, answer fun trivia questions and learn more about the special 75th anniversary logo created by Brian Selznick, 2008 Caldecott Medal Winner. The design presents Caldecott characters from across the decades. If you enjoy these questions, you will be ready for 75 years of interesting trivia that will be presented in this very special Children and Libraries. This is an issue you will be passing around to everyone you know!

Interested in submitting a manuscript for future issues of Children and Libraries? The Editorial Advisory Committee seeks manuscripts on best practices in children’s services, Every Child Ready to Read programming, Common Core and STEM-related programming, collaborations between libraries and local organizations, recent author visits, successful reading programs, and Tween programming.
