On Sunday night, there was a joint reception co-hosted by the NMRT (New Member Round Table) and the RMRT (Retired Member Round Table). As a new ALA member, I was invited to attend. I appreciate that these groups are based on tenure and interest, rather than age, as even though I’m joining the ALA later in my career, there’s a lot I don’t know about libraries yet!

Emerging Leaders Survey: Opportunities with the New Members Round Table
One thing you may not know about ALA’s Emerging Leaders program is that every year, new cohort members get to choose a project from a list submitted by various round tables and committees to work on during their cohort year. The project I chose is “Driving Engagement: Developing a Marketing Strategy for NMRT”. The New Members Round Table (NMRT) primarily serves members of ALA who have been involved for less than 10 years and who want to be more involved in ALA as a whole. The way NMRT seeks to achieve this is with various programmatic offerings for its members. You have a lot of different options to get involved, including but not limited to committee assignments, mentorship matches, a resume review service, and even programs centered on how to attend ALA conferences!

ALA Annual is many things to me. The best time of year? yes! Librarian Christmas (or huge celebration?) Yes! Professional development? yes! Networking? Yes! Lots of decked out librarians in their finest cat or mermaid creations? Yes and yes and yes and yes! lol! But one thing that ALA Annual means to me is mentorship. When I was a wee librarian at my first ALA- now 5 years ago- I immediately signed up for a conference mentor through NMRT and I have been lucky enough to keep meeting with her years later! ALA is overwhelming… conferences are gigantic and jam-packed and even when you are not #alaleftbehind you can develop serious #FOMO when you are there! It is impossible to do everything, and you may or may not luck into doing just some of the things you wanted to do! So search out what interests you in the organization and…
