ALA Annual 2023

ALSC Executive Board at #alaac23

Did you know that meetings of the ALSC Executive Board are open to all members? Guests are welcome to attend, unless the Board moves into executive session. As a Board member, I regularly attend meetings of the full Board (which are also open to guests), but being a guest at the Executive Board meetings gives me more details and background about our organization and leadership. Attending these meetings is a great way for members to learn more about ALSC governance. If you’re curious, join us to see first-hand this work in action. As a Board member, I love hearing from members to know their questions, concerns, and priorities. It helps us make informed decisions that best guide the strategic direction of the organization.

So what, exactly, does the Executive Board talk about? Today’s meeting covered:

Budget Updates

The Board regularly talks about budget trends and expectations. Budget conversations help members understand where our money comes from and how we use it.

Strategic Planning

Our current strategic plan will end on August 31, 2023. This year, we’ve focused on drafting an updated strategic plan and initiatives. This great conversation session helped prioritize projects for the next three years in light of our passions and capacity. The Board discussed goals versus strategies, as well as strategic plan initiatives versus work owned by committees. Saturday’s Board meeting includes additional space for discussion and, hopefully, a vote on a final plan.

What’s Next?

Attending conference in Chicago this year? There’s still one more chance to see the Board in action. The full Board will be meeting on Saturday, June 24 from 8 AM until 12 PM in room W475a at McCormick Place. If you’re not able to join us at conference, don’t worry – our meetings throughout the year are open to all members, too. Find our schedule online. Have questions about Board work? You can reach out to any Board member at any time, too. You can find a full list of Board members on the ALSC website.

Today’s guest contributor is Jaime Eastman (she/her/hers). Jaime is a senior Public Services Librarian and Family Place Coordinator at the Harrington Library, one of the Plano (Texas) Public Library locations. She’s currently serving as a member of the ALSC Board of Directors. This will be her second Annual Conference. She is looking forward to many things, including finalizing the strategic plan with the rest of the Board, seeing great educational sessions sponsored by ALSC, and connecting with members both in person and through the blog. Jaime is currently working on at least two ambitious cross stitch projects, dreaming of future travel plans, and reading far too many books at once. As a child, she wanted to grow up to be an author. Writing for the blog and publishing with Children and Libraries feel like a good start, and she regrets nothing about her adult decision to be a librarian doing storytimes who didn’t have to grow up too much.
