Tomorrow is September 1, and that launches the monthlong Library Card Sign-Up Celebration. It’s an opportunity to reach out to members of your community, especially the young people, to make sure they are officially library members!

Aligning Library Card Sign-up with the start of the school year allows you to take full advantage of the many outreach opportunities available, like the ones I discussed in my last blog post. Bring along applications and, if possible, work with circulation to sign people up remotely.
Happily, my library went fine free this year; however, if yours has not yet made this change, perhaps they would be willing to waive fines for students during Sign-Up Month, as a way to get young people back in the stacks!
As always, the American Library Association (ALA) has tools to help you celebrate. This year’s honorary chairs are Tony Award-winning actress, singer/songwriter and philanthropist Idina Menzel and her sister Cara Mentzel, who is an author and educator. ALA has digital graphics, sample proclamations, templates for yard signs, Library Card Sign-Up Month Bingo and more.
How is your library celebrating this year?
This post addresses the core competencies of I. Commitment to Client Group and V. Outreach & Advocacy.
