As a first time ALA annual goer, my real struggle was deciding when to attend sessions and when to have coffee or meet with someone to network. Let me just tell you, it is four days later and I didn’t find a good answer to my dilemma, except do the best you can to balance both.

All my synapses were firing at the 2017 ALSC Charlemae Rollins President’s Program today. At this program, titled Plugging into the Digital Age: Libraries Engaging and Supporting Families with Today’s Literacy, three experts presented the latest research on digital technology, how it relates to childhood development and childhood literacy, and how librarians can use this information to become more effective media mentors for both kids and adults.

I know that, to some, “social justice” is a scary word. A radical word. So, I was heartened to see how many people showed up early Sunday morning to attend a panel titled “Libraries Are Not Neutral Spaces: Social Justice Advocacy in Librarianship.”

Think about deselecting everything that does not circulate to dispose of unnesessary shelf units. This is exactly what the Speakers of “Stay and Play: Open Space for STEM” did at their libraries in Canada. Literally, they deselected 30% of the children’s collection.
