ALA Midwinter 2014

The Experiences of a First Time Committee member at #alamw14

This morning I went to my first ALSC meeting as an actual member of a committee! It was extremely exciting, as well as a bit daunting.

But this is ALSC, so even though I was nervous going into the meeting, the moment I walked in the door and was greeted by my Chair I immediately relaxed. The atmosphere was so welcoming and the other smiling committee members so warm and friendly. The meeting was efficient, yet fun and full of laughter. We built on each other’s thoughts and ideas to create something greater than any one of us could develop on our own.

Here are a few things I learned from my first committee experience:
~Don’t rely on technology! Bring your notes in paper form. There may or may not be internet access in your meeting room.
~Bring ideas to the table. Don’t be afraid to voice your ideas. If you think it’s a fascinating idea, most likely others will too.
~Ask questions. Not just during the meeting, but before and after as well. Ask for clarification. Chances are you aren’t the only person who is looking for more information.

So, if you’re considering filling out the ALSC volunteer form this year, do it!
