How are picture books and graphic novels different? How are they similar? They both tell stories that rely heavily on visual information, but their creation, design, and artistic elements vary. Both picture books and graphic novels are mediums, which can contain many genres (nonfiction, action, biography, etc.) Each has the potential to bring a unique and powerful reading experience to a child or teen.
After talking about the concepts of sequential art, Erin shared some great program ideas. My favorite is to use wordless picture books and graphic novels in book discussion groups. There are so many good ones out there, and it would be awesome to see how kids put their own narrative to the images.
