Wonderful phrase from Denise Fleming when asked how winning the Caldecott honor changed her career: “It shines a light on your work.” All illustrators agree that the award brings them not only more financial security, but also a lift in confidence and the freedom to pursue more creative projects, maybe even pushing themselves in new directions.
Also, fascinated to learn that Denise first got into paper making by taking an adult education class at her local high school on a whim, purely as a reason to get out of the house in February and spend some time with her sister. Lucky for us she found her passion there!
