Three Things You May Not Know About the Budget Committee

I joined the Budget committee about one year ago as Chair and I’ve learned a lot since then. Here are a few things you may not know:

  1. The Budget committee provides membership oversight of ALSC’s financesand offers advice on the budget.
The first thing you might be wondering is, what even is the Budget Committee and what do you do? We are an important, but often under the radar committee that falls under Priority Group IV — Organizational Support. Since ALSC is a membership organization, the Budget Committee provides membership oversight of ALSC’s finances and offers advice on the budget. The Budget Committee also reviews ALSC activities for fiscal implications and helps make financial recommendations to the ALSC board. It’s a great way to have a better “behind the scenes” understanding of how ALSC is funded and how it runs.
  2. ALSC is a fiscally stable and revenue generating division of ALA.
This means that ALSC has a net positive budget. One of our major revenue streams comes from seals sales and permissions, meaning the awards seals that publishers put on books (physically or digitally) that are Caldecott, Newbery, and other award winners. Every time a publisher uses the seal, they pay ALSC to use the seal, which supports our programs and initiatives. You can learn more about how ALSC is funded here.
  3. You can get involved!
We rely on interested and committed members who help us accomplish our work. If you have experience working with a budget (as most of us do!) you can volunteer to be part of the Budget committee utilizing the ALSC online committee volunteer form. We also look for members to help with seals revenue research and with creating infographics to help disseminate information.
