Do you know about SYNC? Each summer, AudioFile Magazine partners with over a dozen publishers and with Overdrive Education to offer free audiobooks to listeners. Starting this week, SYNC is back for 2022! Each week, they make two free audiobooks available for download.
I know I don’t have to convince librarians about the importance of audiobooks. Listening to audiobooks can help young readers develop fluency, expose them to higher level vocabulary, and allow readers at different levels to enjoy the same books. (Source: APA Sound Learning) And they’re getting more popular all the time. According to 2020 research from the Audio Publishers Association, 49% of parents report that their children listened to audiobooks in the past year. So, you’ll definitely want to spread the word about this program bringing free audiobooks to your patrons.
So, what is SYNC?
If you’re not familiar with SYNC, take a look at their website AudiobookSYNC. Each week for 16 weeks (starting THIS WEEK), SYNC makes two paired titles available for download. Teens, librarians, club leaders, and educators may register for the FREE program and sign up for email or text alerts at AudiobookSYNC. Any registered individual may participate by downloading OverDrive’s Sora app to their device of choice and following directions for using the AudiobookSYNC “school.” The participants then use the app to borrow titles each week (titles roll over at midnight Eastern Time each Thursday). Included titles will be available to borrow for one week only but remain accessible to the registered user indefinitely within Sora.
Are the free audiobooks good ones?
In 2022, 32 titles will be accessible through the SYNC program during a 16-week-long season. Authors represented in the 2022 SYNC lineup include Bill Konigsburg, Maureen Johnson, Lilliam Rivera, Kosoko Jackson, Kim Johnson, Francisco X. Stork and more. 2022 narrators include the following narrators of Odyssey-honored titles: Bahni Turpin, Dion Graham, Kate Rudd and more.
This is a wonderful opportunity to promote with your students and library patrons. Your students and library patrons may be able to borrow audiobooks from your library. SYNC gives them the opportunity to hold on to audiobooks. Promote SYNC at your teen programs or alongside your summer reading program. And SYNC provides a free toolkit to help you promote these free audiobooks with your patrons.
