ALA Virtual Midwinter 2021

Virtual Celebration of Last Year’s Schneider Award Winners at #alamw21

On Sunday, before the excitement of the next day’s 2021 YMA announcements, it was nice to reflect on some of the winners from last year by attending the 2020 Schneider Award Virtual Celebration. It was lovely to hear each of the winning authors and illustrators from last year as they spoke of their winning titles.

Schneider Family Book Award seal
The Schneider Award “honors an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.”

The books selected by the 2020 Schneider Family Book Award committee were:

Young Children Winner: Just Ask!: Be Different, Be Brave, Be You!, written by Sonia Sotomayor, illustrated by Rafael López.

Young Children Honor Title: A Friend for Henry, by Jenn Bailey, illustrated by Mika Song.

Middle Grade Winner: Song for a Whale, written by Lynne Kelly.

Middle Grade Honor Title: Each Tiny Spark, by Pablo Cartaya.

Teen Winner: Cursed, written by Karol Ruth Silverstein.

Teen Honor Title: The Silence Between Us, written by Alison Gervais.

Heart-felt and articulate, each author and illustrator spoke to the process and/or the background which led to the creation of these titles.

This webinar has been recorded and is available online here.  I encourage you to make the time to listen in. You won’t be disappointed!
