This morning, I met with ALSC’s School-Age Programs and Services Committee. I’ve served as a member of this committee for a couple of years now, and I absolutely love it. Each committee member is dynamic and knowledgeable and our projects really don’t ever seem to feel like work. We discussed a range of things at the meeting, which included past and possible future projects. We specifically talked about updating some of our booklists, such as our Best Books for School-Age list. We would also like to publish more articles for Children and Libraries on programs/services that are relevant to you.

I am seeing a budding movement similar to the focus on preschool storytime (through Flannel Friday and Storytime Underground) beginning for school age programming. Yeoman’s work is being done by Lisa Shaia through her Thrive Thursday efforts. But I’m wondering if ALSC SAP&SC might want to really jump in and lend support/be leaders/partners in this as well. Wouldn’t it be interesting and amazing if the committee could be part of the gestalt on FB/twitter/blogs and be part of the catalyst – as individual youth librarians have outside of ALA in developing FF and SU. No pressure but there is still a yawning gap for school-age programming mojo!

Marge, I completely agree! Personally, I would love to be involved in this effort. I’ll run this by the committee as well.

I am a Children’s Librarian in a public library. I specialize in behavior issues in children. I hear lots of questions and chatter about this and think there is a need for training in this area. What do ya’ll think?
