ALSC Member Profile — Krishna Grady

Each month, an ALSC member is profiled and we learn a little about their professional life and a bit about their not-so-serious side. Using just a few questions, we try to keep the profiles fun while highlighting the variety of members in our organization. So, without further ado, welcome to our ALSC profile, ten questions with ALSC member, Krishna Grady:

1.         What do you do, and how long have you been doing it?

I am a Children’s Librarian at the Darien Library in Darien, CT. I have been working as a librarian for two and a half years. I plan art, technology and story-time programs for toddlers through tweens. I answer reference questions. I help plan summer reading. I run book groups. I do outreach story-times at local preschools. I also sing to kids at the desk and basically all over the library. I am currently working on an early literacy video project for new parents that will be featured as part of our baby book kits. I have the most amazing job in the world!

2.        Why did you join ALSC? Do you belong to any other ALA divisions or roundtables?

I joined ALSC while I was in library school so that I could have a built in community of amazing men and women who are doing what I’m doing and could offer me advice and guidance as a newbie librarian. I also belong to PLA and I am on the PLA subcommittee in charge of planning the 2014 annual conference.

3.  Do you have a “guilty pleasure” TV show?

I love the show Scandal. It is so melodramatic, a real edge of your seat thriller. I have to admit there have been times while watching Scandal that I’ve held my breath and then exclaimed “no” at the television. It’s so over the top but that‘s what makes for really riveting television.

4.      What is your dream vacation?

My dream vacation is the London to Venice trip on the Orient Express quickly followed by The Royal Scotsman trip. I read too much Agatha Christie growing up and watched Death on the Nile like it was my job. J

5..  What’s the last song you sang out loud?

Can’t stop talking from the movie musical Let’s Dance. It was made famous by Betty Hutton.

6.  Favorite Caldecott book?

My favorite Caldecott book is The Lion & the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney. The artwork beautifully tells a story we all know but Jerry Pinkney makes the story come alive. I gave my mom a signed copy for Christmas and she loved it!

7.  Favorite app?

My favorite kids app right now is Endless Alphabet. My favorite “grown up” app is Vine. I’m obsessed with making 6 sec films.

8.    What do you hope to accomplish in your professional career?

One of the things that I hope to accomplish in my professional career is making the library a place that everyone wants to be. You want to go to the movies on a Friday night? No, you want to come to the library! I want the library to be a place where young and old in the community feel like they can go and get that Cheers feeling, you know the place “where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came”

9.    What is your favorite fingerplay?

My favorite is A Tootie Ta. It’s a great active rhyme that works well with preschool and large groups. I love doing any kind of silly rhyme that helps kids get outside of themselves and not worry what they look like to their peers.

10.   Have you ever been photobombed? OR Have you ever photobombed someone?

I was recently photobombed by my co-worker Claire Moore during ALA midwinter. Watch out for me at ALA annual I will be attempting to photobomb you all? J
