Many of us have heard about outcomes based evaluation but have not learned all of the ins and outs of actually applying the techniques to a real program or project. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in partnership with Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) is offering a low-cost online course on outcomes-based planning and evaluation (OBPE). The normal cost for the self-paced course is $150 per individual or working group. However, IMLS is offering a number of scholarships for museum and library professionals serving economically challenged populations. Assistance is based characteristics of the parent institution and the individual’s commitment as reflected in a project proposal. Participants in Shaping Outcomes work at their own pace through five interactive modules over approximately four weeks. Taking the course will help applicants refine project purposes and evaluation plans, which is critical for a successful IMLS grant but will also help with many other funders. After taking the course participants will gain or enhance several skills, including: being able communicate program benefits to your community, determining which programs to expand, support, or replicate, promoting partnerships and collaboration, and attracting new funding sources. You should also be able to clearly articulate the purpose of your program, measure the effectiveness of current programs, and produce grant proposals with data showing what a difference your institution is making in the community.
