So, there I was Building a Better World and I thought of you. If I could give you just five things I want you to take away from my 2017 summer reading workshops, these would be they:
Camp Nanowrimo
NaNoWriMo or National Novel Writing Month is when participants race to write a 50,000 word first draft of their novel in just 30 days. The main event takes place in November but Camp NaNo takes place in April and July – it’s kind of a “NaNo Light” – where you can limit your word count to just 10,000 words.
Yes, it’s probably a little nuts to try writing 50k words in 30 days, but it is also exhilarating, inspiring, and just plain fun! It forces you to shut off that inner editor and lets you simply fill the page with your story.
Hour of Code
The Hour of Code is a global movement by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries through a one-hour introduction to computer science and computer programming.
Makedo
Find some cardboard, grab some Makedo tools and get started.
Children learn by doing, creating, experimenting, failing and maybe succeeding but that’s not essential. The creations open the door to imaginative play where the child is protagonist in a hack-able world of their own making.
Papertoys
Completely FREE. Just print, cut, fold and tape.

2017 Teen Video Challenge
In the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) teen video challenge, teens make videos to:
- Encourage others to use public libraries
- Promote reading all summer long
This year’s slogan is Build a Better World.
Teens create videos interpreting this theme individually or as a team.
Winning videos from all participating states will become the official Teen Public Service Announcements for the National CSLP Summer Reading Program.
