One of my favorite stories is how her mother and father met in Cuba. Since neither could speak the other&#8217;s language, they communicated with each other through drawing pictures.<\/p>\n<p>On ALSC&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/mgrps\/divs\/alsc\/awardsgrants\/bookmedia\/belpremedal\/belpreabout\/index.cfm\">Pura Belpr\u00e9<\/a> page, the 2009 Belpr\u00e9 Committee Chair Claudette McLinn remarks, \u201cEngle\u2019s prose breathes life into each character, and her rich use of language catapults the reader into the jungles of Cuba.
