Over the next few months you\u2019ll be seeing all sorts of blog posts from us that will get you thinking about how everyday things may affect Intellectual Freedom, from not compiling a list of kid friendly apps because it goes against your own beliefs about technology, to reading levels, our goal is to get everyone (including ourselves) thinking differently!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In doing some research for a blog post that ties together access, self- censorship and digital natives, I started to come across resources and readings that I thought were helpful and got me thinking in a new way. \u00a0\u00a0I thought they would be important to share with you all.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slj.com\/2009\/02\/censorship\/a-dirty-little-secret-self-censorship\/#\">A Dirty Little Secret: Self-Censorship \u00a0by Debra Lau Whelan (SLJ, 2009) <\/a>How self-censorship changed the fate of a book.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyla.org\/images\/nyla\/files\/Self-Censorship.pdf\">The NYLA Self Censorship Test \u00a0<\/a>A short survey that highlights different ways staff can infringe on Intellectual Freedom rights, without even realizing it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ccbc.education.wisc.edu\/freedom\/whatif\/archives.asp\">The \u201cWhat-If\u201d\u009d Forum at the CCBC <\/a>A collection of past questions surrounding Intellectual Freedom \u2014 and their answers- hosted by the Cooperative Children\u2019s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin- Madison.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m still digging through a stack of articles and resources 20+ pages deep and don\u2019t necessarily want to share them until I feel they\u2019re worthwhile, and obviously there\u2019s still more ground to cover that could lead to a rabbit hole of Intellectual Freedom thoughts, but I hope that I at least got other people thinking.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As always, I love to hear from others so let me know your thoughts and if you find any of your own resources.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>ALSC Intellectual Freedom Committee Member Alyson Feldman-Piltch \u00a0is an MLS\/MIS student at Indiana University Bloomington, focusing on Youth Services and Multicultural Literature. \u00a0When she isn\u2019t following the Red Sox or doing homework, she can be found daydreaming about the beach. \u00a0She can be reached at Alyson.fp@gmail.com<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In January, the ALSC Intellectual Freedom met at Midwinter. \u00a0While we talked about many things, the overarching theme was what does Intellectual Freedom mean now? \u00a0\u00a0IF is more than just banned books and book challenges, at its core it\u2019s about access to information and resources.
