Neuman of\u00a0<i>Giving Our Children a Fighting Chance: \u00a0Poverty, Literacy and<br \/>\nthe Development of Information Capital.<\/i>\u00a0 (Teachers College Press, Columbia University: 2012.)<\/p>\n<p>This powerful book was brought to my attention last summer by fellow ALSC member Cen Campbell.\u00a0 The authors observed and analyzed the effects of improvements in library services and resources in two very different communities within close geographic proximity. Dr. Celano notes that the research explores the &#8220;ecology of inequality&#8221; emerging in our country, showing how environment influences reading, knowledge gain, and information capital development. \u00a0 Using two divergent Philadelphia neighborhoods as a backdrop, it examines a growing disparity as children born in neighborhoods devoid of resources and opportunities have much less of a chance of succeeding in today&#8217;s<br \/>\nknowledge economy than do those who are born in more affluent areas. \u00a0By providing access to print and digital information sources, it is clear that our nation&#8217;s libraries play a critical role in the lives of children growing up in poverty.<\/p>\n<p>The ALSC Early Childhood Programs and Services Committee will distribute a list of resources to support and extend the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Distinguished Service Award will be announced at this session. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about current ALSC committee activities, hear legislative updates that affect children and libraries, meet the candidates for ALA President, and connect with fellow ALSC members.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss it!
