{"id":7065,"date":"2013-08-09T10:24:10","date_gmt":"2013-08-09T14:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=7065"},"modified":"2013-08-12T14:14:55","modified_gmt":"2013-08-12T18:14:55","slug":"get-ready-for-kindergarten-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/get-ready-for-kindergarten-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Ready for Kindergarten Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">It&#8217;s hard to believe that our summer reading program is coming to an end.\u00a0 Our final program is this Saturday, and school starts in nine days!\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>We tend to go light on programming after SRP ends, but we always have a &#8220;Kindergarten Kickoff&#8221; story time for children entering kindergarten.\u00a0 We read stories about kindergarten or the first day of school, do fingerplays about school\/counting\/colors\/other concepts, and give them a &#8220;Kindergarten Star&#8221; certificate.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a low-key but fun way to acknowledge a big step in our young patrons&#8217; lives.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, I&#8217;ve accumulated several favorite read alouds about kindergarten or the first day of school:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/contentcafe2.btol.com\/ContentCafe\/Jacket.aspx?UserID=III51&amp;Password=BT0051&amp;Return=1&amp;Type=L&amp;Value=0399242260&amp;erroroverride=1\" width=\"400\" height=\"498\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Where is Tommy? The animals on the farm are missing their friend, who never fails to visit them on\u00a0a daily basis.\u00a0 When Dog tells them that he is at a place called &#8220;Kindergarten,&#8221; they are even more worried: will he ever return? Luckily, Tommy returns and tells them all about his big day.\u00a0 Kids will love the hilarious repartee between the concerned beasts.\u00a0 Tommy&#8217;s excitement over school is a welcome relief to stories overly focused on a character&#8217;s trepidation about school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/contentcafe2.btol.com\/ContentCafe\/Jacket.aspx?UserID=III51&amp;Password=BT0051&amp;Return=1&amp;Type=L&amp;Value=0152020322&amp;erroroverride=1\" width=\"400\" height=\"318\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The traditional circle song is turned into a charming &#8220;first day of school&#8221; story featuring a young pig reluctant to start his school career.\u00a0 Beginning with greeting the teacher, hanging his hat, and building a tower, we follow our nervous hero as he eventually warms to his new routine after making a new friend during outside play.\u00a0 Pigs of all colors and shapes, as well as one in a wheelchair, alos enjoy snack time, dress up play,story time, show and tell, and clean up before being picked up by their parents at the end of the day (which indicates that this is a preschool setting).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/contentcafe2.btol.com\/ContentCafe\/Jacket.aspx?UserID=III51&amp;Password=BT0051&amp;Return=1&amp;Type=L&amp;Value=006176275X&amp;erroroverride=1\" width=\"400\" height=\"517\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Who says a buffalo can&#8217;t go to kindergarten? Well,\u00a0one special buffalo\u00a0certainly can in this offbeat and funny kindergarten tale.\u00a0 If your buffalo has a backpack, he is on track for being ready for school.\u00a0 Even if he&#8217;s shy&#8211;that&#8217;s OK, too.\u00a0 Learning how to hold scissors, not grazing during reccess, and finger painting are all things that a buffalo can learn to accomplish.\u00a0 Expect lots of giggling with this one!<\/p>\n<p>Do you have any favorite back to school\/starting school stories?
