{"id":6866,"date":"2013-07-01T19:10:09","date_gmt":"2013-07-01T23:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=6866"},"modified":"2013-07-01T23:37:35","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T03:37:35","slug":"top-inspirational-moments-ala2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/top-inspirational-moments-ala2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Inspirational Moments @ALA2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my first blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/im-here-im-here\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a>, I wrote I wanted to be inspired by this year&#8217;s Annual Conference&#8230;and ALA brought it, big time.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/author-inspiration\/\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> about fabulous Lauren Myracle and the best panel discussion ever; here&#8217;s\u00a05 more inspirational moments from the conference (in no particular order):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintsabina.org\/pastor-s-corner\/biography.html\" target=\"_blank\">Father Michael Pfleger<\/a>, who spoke about gun violence and how libraries can help, looking out at a room full of librarians and saying, &#8220;Do you know how powerful you are?&#8221;\u00a0 He spoke passionately about children, saying &#8220;&#8230;we can&#8217;t keep telling children what they can&#8217;t do.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Author and illustrator Peter H. Reynolds and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedotclub.org\/dotday\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;International Dot Day&#8221;<\/a> on September 15th.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t wait to make plans to celebrate this at my library!<\/li>\n<li>In &#8220;Storytelling Mojo,&#8221; telling another person, in 90 seconds, how my library is evolving and realizing I was focused, positive and articulate.\u00a0 Listening to that person and realizing that her challenges and concerns are so similar to mine, even though her library serves 250,000 people with 8 branches and I work in a small town library with one building.<\/li>\n<li>The news that Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Untold-History-United-States\/dp\/1451613512\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1372719899&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=oliver+stone+peter+kuznick\" target=\"_blank\">book<\/a> <em>The Untold History of the United<\/em> <em>States<\/em> is being made into a graphic novel and possibly a YA version.<\/li>\n<li>Alice Walker.\u00a0 She began by exhaling deeply and saying, &#8220;I&#8217;m so glad to see you.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Alice-Walker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6868\" style=\"width: 89px;\" alt=\"Alice Walker\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Alice-Walker-225x300.jpg\" width=\"111\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A beautiful soul and an extraordinary writer.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m so grateful for the opportunity to be here in Chicago, that my library is willing to support my professional development by sending me to this conference.\u00a0 I plan to return home and channel all this inspiration into providing quality services to our library patrons!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my first blog post, I wrote I wanted to be inspired by this year&#8217;s Annual Conference&#8230;and ALA brought it, big time.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve posted about fabulous Lauren Myracle and the best panel discussion ever; here&#8217;s\u00a05 more inspirational moments from the conference (in no particular order): Father Michael Pfleger, who spoke about gun violence and how libraries can help, looking out at a room full of librarians and saying, &#8220;Do you know how powerful you are?&#8221;\u00a0 He spoke passionately about children, saying &#8220;&#8230;we can&#8217;t keep telling children what they can&#8217;t do.&#8221; Author and illustrator Peter H.
