Angela Nolet from King County Library System has a lot of great things to say about that library system’s Mock Newbery program. What started as a staff initiative to keep children’s services folks informed of the new titles in kid lit has developed into a robust program where the library partners with classrooms of students who do the reading and voting once the initial ballot of books has been created.<\/p>\n
The opportunities for student engagement seem endless: reading, of course; book talks and skits; videos; book reviews and other short writing; discussion and debate; online voting. There are truly so many ways to get tons of children not only excited about the books, but enthusiastically and passionately fighting for the ones they love. That sort of reading engagement is phenomenal and contagious.
