Each month, an ALSC member is profiled and we learn a little about their professional life and a bit about their not-so-serious side. Using just a few questions, we try to keep the profiles fun while highlighting the variety of members in our organization. This month, we randomly selected a candidate who bravely agreed to participate. So, without further ado, welcome to our ALSC profile<\/a>, ten (plus) questions with ALSC member, Carrie Gardner.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 What do you do, and how long have you been doing it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>I have wanted to be a librarian since I was in Kindergarten!\u00a0 The evidence can be found in my yearbooks—I consistently said: I will be a librarian when I grow up.\u00a0 True to my word, I have been a librarian since I was 17.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 How long have you been an ALA member?<\/strong>\u00a0 Why did you join ALSC?<\/strong> \u00a0Do you belong to any other ALA divisions or roundtables?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have been an ALA member since 1990.\u00a0 I have always been focused on youth issues, so I’m a member of ALSC, YALSA and AASL.\u00a0 I also belong to the Intellectual Freedom Round Table and the Social Responsibilities Round Table.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Who was the last person you said \u201cthank you\u201d\u009d to?\u00a0 Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The waiter who served me a wonderful crabcake dinner tonight. Why?\u00a0 Because we should all say ‘Thank You’ and mean it as often as possible!<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong>\u00a0 Favorite Dr.<\/strong> Seuss book?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh! the Places You’ll Go!<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0 <\/strong>What motivates you?\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Watching a patron interact with information that they want and\/or need! <\/strong><\/p>\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>What are you proudest of having accomplished in your professional career? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Having been an educator for almost 20 years, I’m most proud of my former students (and patrons) and their accomplishments.\u00a0 They have written award winning books, won Olympic medals, started charities, had great children, and become productive, happy, content members of society!\u00a0 I’m so lucky to read about it all on facebook and feel that I was part of the village that helped raise them.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0 What is your favorite word?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Vivacious!\u00a0 I first heard it in Gone with the Wind and it still makes me smile!\u00a0 It has a 100% positive connotation in my mind.<\/p>\n

8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 E-books or Print?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Either!\u00a0 Whatever I have at my fingertips.\u00a0 I own over 7000 print books but also have the ereader software on my ipad.\u00a0 Like Jackie Kennedy Onassis, I hope to die surrounded by my favorite books.<\/p>\n

9.\u00a0 Do you have a \u201cguilty pleasure\u201d\u009d TV show?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. I think most all of TV qualifies as a guilty pleasure and not educational.\u00a0 Okay, if I must confess–it’s the Simpsons.\u00a0 I find the cultural references and social commentary fascinating.<\/p>\n

10. \u00a0What\u2019s your favorite color?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Purple.\u00a0 Always has been, always will.\u00a0 My grandmother made me a gaudy purple blanket before I was born and it imprinted on my developing brain in utero.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

11.\u00a0 What are you afraid of?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

A world where citizens are not able to access the information they need in order to be informed members of a representative democracy.<\/p>\n

12.\u00a0 If you could bring a folk or fairytale character to life, who would it be?\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

It would not involve a female character being made complete because of the acquisition of a man.\u00a0 As a child, I liked tales about Paul Bunyan.<\/p>\n

13.\u00a0 Do you have any pets?\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

A few thousand bees.<\/p>\n

14.. What\u2019s your favorite season?\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Spring.\u00a0 Because I live in the Northeast, I feel as if Mother Earth wakes up from her winter slumber and comes alive in the Spring. <\/strong><\/p>\n

15.\u00a0 What has been a defining moment for you as a librarian?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was invited to legally travel to Cuba and study the flow of information in a society where Internet access is heavily filtered by the government and librarians can only provide resources approved by a government bureaucrat.\u00a0 It cemented my belief that librarians and all American citizens must continue to fight for access to all information so tyrannical leaders can not take root in America.<\/p>\n
