{"id":4444,"date":"2012-07-13T00:01:58","date_gmt":"2012-07-13T04:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=4444"},"modified":"2012-07-12T22:50:11","modified_gmt":"2012-07-13T02:50:11","slug":"series-books-in-storytime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2012\/07\/series-books-in-storytime\/","title":{"rendered":"Series Books in Storytime!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While at ALA Annual, I was super excited to see some of the new additions to familiar series that are forthcoming and it started me thinking about why series books are so popular, both for patrons and librarians. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/llamatimetoshare.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/llamatimetoshare.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/llamatimetoshare-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Series books are all about familiarity. Patrons recognize characters from an early age and will eagerly settle into a new adventure with an old friend. Similarly librarians know that if they offer a Pigeon book to a young reader, there will be more books for that young reader to devour once they are done. <\/p>\n<p>But my personal favorite way to use series books are in storytime. Librarians can easily use series books as a way to update older storytime plans. You&#8217;ve got a llama theme? Make sure you put the newest <em>LLama LLama<\/em> book in there and it&#8217;s suddenly fresh again. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/oliviafairy-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/oliviafairy-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/oliviafairy.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/>It&#8217;s obvious why we should include these books in storytime, when kids suddenly shout delighted, &#8220;That&#8217;s an OLIVIA BOOK.&#8221; Their eyes light up and you see them settle down on the rug for a familiar character, for a brand-new adventure, for an excellent story. <\/p>\n<p>Here are some other favorites to use in storytime, though I&#8217;m aiming to be a bit more contemporary since everyone knows about Arthur, Max and Ruby, and Curious George already:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Baby Owl, originally from <strong>I&#8217;m Not Cute<\/strong> by Jonathan Allen<\/li>\n<li>Bear, originally from <strong>Bear In Underwear<\/strong> by Todd Doodler<\/li>\n<li>Elephant and Piggie, originally from <strong>Today I Will Fly!<\/strong> by Mo Willems<\/li>\n<li>Little Quack, originally from <strong>Little Quack<\/strong> by Lauren Thompson<\/li>\n<li>Llama Llama, originally from <strong>Llama Llama Red Pajama<\/strong> by Anna Dewdney<\/li>\n<li>Olivia, originally from <strong>Olivia<\/strong> by Ian Falconer<\/li>\n<li>The Peas, originally from <strong>LMNO Peas<\/strong> by Keith Baker<\/li>\n<li>Pete the Cat, originally from <strong>Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes<\/strong> by James Dean and Eric Litwin<\/li>\n<li>Pigeon, originally from <strong>Don&#8217;t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus<\/strong> by Mo Willems<\/li>\n<li>Rocket, originally from <strong>How Rocket Learned to Read<\/strong> by Tad Hills<\/li>\n<li>Scaredy Squirrel, originally from <strong>Scaredy Squirrel<\/strong> by Melanie Watt<\/li>\n<li>Splat the Cat, originally from <strong>Splat the Cat<\/strong> by Rob Scotton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But which series books are your favorites to use in storytime?
