I’ve officially decided that the Reading Market is my go-to spot for coffee and a pastry. Not only were they delicious yesterday, but the price was also surprisingly reasonable, a rare combo during a conference.

I kicked things off today by heading straight to the exhibit hall. For those of you living vicariously through this blog, let me just say: the exhibit floor is not for the faint of heart. You really need a plan. Did I have one? Of course not. I give great advice, but I’m terrible at taking it. The one thing I did do right? I wore comfortable shoes.

I strolled onto the floor with no tote bag, no knapsack, and was immediately greeted by my first author signing and giveaway of the day. Kind Like Martha and A Child’s Introduction to Pride, both by Sarah Prager, were the first gems in my haul. I’m so grateful to see the exhibit floor filled with such beautiful, diverse books representing all of our communities.

One of the challenges I face while collecting autographs and books is the temptation to stop and read through every single one. But there are always more treasures waiting. Although I spent my career as a high school librarian, I have a soft spot for picture books. You’re never too old to enjoy them. So far today, I was thrilled to pick up I Got You by Derrick Barnes and The Biggest, Highest Wave by Kerry McQuaide.

Some of my books! – Photo by Arlene Laverde

Each signed book is a gift, but it’s the conversations with the authors that really make the experience special. Their warmth, enthusiasm, and passion for storytelling bring so much joy. They’re the heart of ALA.

Arlene Laverde (she/her/hers) is an adjunct and academic advisor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies Program at Queens College, CUNY, where she prepares future school librarians for school library life.
