It takes courage to purchase books that could become controversial.  And it takes even more courage to place them on a prominent display.  You could, of course, keep these titles in their categorized place on the library\u2019s shelves, with nothing drawing attention to them, or off in the corner, where only those walking by might see them.   That way, you might think, those who need them can find them if they make the effort\u2014the books are available\u2014and you\u2019re also not opening yourself up to a range of complaints.<\/p>\n\n\nRead more: Book Displays:\u00a0An Act of Courage, A Time to Listen<\/span><\/a>\n\n\n

But the truth is that those who feel marginalized in our world may not know how to find the books they need, or they may be afraid to ask.  Bright and inclusive displays highlight the collection and, more importantly, welcome those feeling alone with a big, literary hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of the war in Ukraine, we purchased what books we could in Ukrainian and displayed them at our public services desk.  The conversations we overheard were eye opening.  Most comments included heartfelt thanks, and we learned about the many Ukrainian refugees staying with host families in the area as well as the new English classes being offered at the schools.  At the same time, other library visitors looked at the books uncomfortably and walked away without a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pride Month display annually draws comments during the month of June.  Many parents thank us for having books about Pride then bring home simple board books as well as titles for older readers.  Others browse through the books but don\u2019t check any out. We\u2019ve also been asked to take the display down, or move it to a less visible area, or use \u201cless attractive, less colorful\u201d titles.  Every year brings different responses\u2014of curiosity, surprise, shock, comfort, or gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By listening to comments or even engaging in conversation about book displays, we keep our finger on the pulse of the community.  Often, we receive suggestions to feature specific topics, such as books in Portuguese or displays about disabilities, Christian fiction, mindfulness, or Sikh Awareness Month.  In addition, conversations about our displays have inspired programs we would have never thought about as well as donations of books in multiple languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it\u2019s not easy, but I encourage you to stand by your displays.  If you don\u2019t have one already, draw up a policy about displays either in conjunction with your collection policy or as a separate document.  Most of all, be courageous: try to not move or remove your displays on request.  Instead, hang around nearby, listen, and hear your community members\u2019 thoughts.  What you overhear could even lead to future display topics, programs, services, or collection development strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
