For the last two years, I\u2019ve had the honor of co-chairing ALSC\u2019s Intellectual Freedom Committee<\/a>.  The timing of my chairmanship has been interesting to say the least, as more and more school and public libraries have faced organized efforts to undermine the freedom to read. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The committee recently held a We Are ALSC Chat<\/a> about the dangers and insidious nature of self-censorship.  Following that program, I learned of an exciting opportunity from ALA\u2019s Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table<\/a>: the Addressing Comics Challenges Community Zine Project.<\/a> The project\u2019s purpose is to spread awareness of the work library workers, educators, creators and others do to support the freedom to read by creating original zines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to committee co-chairs Daniel Patton and Eti Berland, \u201cWe are looking for pieces that showcase the many things we can do to fight censorship. We hope that library workers, educators, comics creators, young people, community members, and anyone who supports the freedom to read will join this project and grow our collective knowledge to take action. We\u2019d love to see submissions that adapt our Addressing Comics Challenges toolkit<\/a> as mini-comics, offer practical strategies that you have seen make a difference, dispel myths about censorship, and share strategies for taking care of yourself and your colleagues. We\u2019ve included suggestions in our call for submissions, but there\u2019s no limit to our community\u2019s expertise, insight, and creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
