Information in this blog post focuses on international books to help advance efforts to engage students; perhaps especially those who are recent immigrants to the United States<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With more and more of our young people coming to our school and public libraries speaking languages other than English in the home, a global perspective in looking at award winning titles may be useful in serving your community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/glli-us.org\/prizes\/\">Global Literature in Libraries Initiative Translated YA Book Prize<\/a> (GLLI)<\/strong> <br>Translated YA Book Prize. Awarded in the spring, this relatively new award (the first given in 2019), recognizes teen literature originally published outside of the United States. Incidentally, GLLI has an <a href=\"https:\/\/glli-us.org\/where-to-buy-chinese-language-books\/\">excellent resource for buying books in Chinese<\/a> if that is a need for your community. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is worth noting that this year, in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/press-releases\/2024\/01\/2024-batchelder-award-honors-houses-story-dragon-s-den-ghostly-mansion\">Batcheldor Award<\/a> honorees, other award winning titles were translated books: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Printz Honor Book, <em>Fire From the Sky<\/em> by Mia Backe \u00c5stot, translated by Eva Apelqvist <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Cross My Heart and Never Lie<\/em> by Nora D\u00e5snes, translated by Matt Bagguley was named the Stonewall Book Award &#8211; Children\u2019s Award Book. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Mi Pap\u00e1 es un Agr\u00edcola\/My Father, the Farmworker<\/em> by J. Roman P\u00e9rez Varela, is a bilingual book that earned the Pura Belpr\u00e9 Youth Illustration Honor Book<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Benita y las Criaturas Nocturnas<\/em> by Mariana Llanos is a Spanish language book also published separately in English that earned the Pura Belpr\u00e9 Children\u2019s Author Honor Book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>USBBY Outstanding International Books List <\/strong>(United States Board on Books for Young People) the US national section of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibby.org\/\">International Board on Books for Young People<\/a> (IBBY)<br>Although not an ALA organization, there is ALA representation on the USBBY board (if you\u2019re interested, keep your eyes open for the call for candidates!). The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usbby.org\/outstanding-international-books-list.html\">awards list<\/a> is published in January or February of each year, as of the writing of this post, the 2024 list had not yet been posted on the USBBY award site. IBBY publishes a biannual list of books for youth depicting characters with varying abilities. The books are in multiple languages and formats, including Braille, dyslexia-friendly fonts, and tactile illustrations, plus other formats. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibby.org\/awards-activities\/awards\/ibby-honour-list\">most current list<\/a> is released in the spring in odd numbered years. Additionally, USBBY and IBBY in collaboration with the Toronto Public Library create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibby.org\/index.php?id=271\">a catalog recognizing outstanding titles<\/a> featuring children\/youth with diverse abilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuatrogatos.org\/premio.php?lang=en\">Cuatrogatos Foundation Award<\/a><\/strong><br>The Cuatrogatos Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in Miami, Florida by writers to encourage Spanish language books for children and youth. All titles are in Spanish.
