{"id":29342,"date":"2023-07-25T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T04:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=29342"},"modified":"2025-04-01T14:45:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T18:45:29","slug":"kindergarten-teachers-wish-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2023\/07\/kindergarten-teachers-wish-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Kindergarten Teachers\u2019 Wish List"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shhhh\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summer\u2019s more than halfway over.&nbsp; I never really like to say that out loud!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon, school hallways will be filled with voices and laughter\u2026and some new kindergarteners.&nbsp; Adjusting to school can be difficult for these little ones, and libraries are striving to help them succeed with lots of kindergarten readiness programming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the question remains\u2014what skills do kindergarten <strong>teachers<\/strong> want to see in their students when they convene for the first time in August or September?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, my library polled our local kindergarten teachers to find out, and then developed a flyer to alert caregivers to those skills\u2026and allow children to practice them on the back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What ranked with teachers?&nbsp; The following academic skills:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Printing their name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Naming and drawing a square, triangle, circle and rectangle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Counting up to ten objects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completing a pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognizing the numbers 1-10.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recalling a short story they just listened to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drawing a picture and explain it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cutting with scissors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing what opposites are.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing the letters of the alphabet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing the beginning sounds of all 26 letters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing the colors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing and generating rhymes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the skills needed went beyond academics into social and life skills, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Knowing how to use the toilet and wash their hands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing how to dress themselves, including buttons and zippers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to sit and listen in a group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to follow simple directions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing their phone number and how to dial it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing how to share and take turns with friends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most surprisingly to me\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Knowing their true first and last name.&nbsp; Many children are called by a nickname, and that\u2019s all they know.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are trying to work these skills into our programming.&nbsp; On the back of the information flyer with this list, we also created a space for kids to practice writing their names, draw a picture, finish a pattern, and cut a line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How are you getting your young students ready for kindergarten?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This post addresses the core competencies of I.
