My first post<\/a> started with the opening session and ended with the prediction that “it goes by so quickly!” That proved to be true. I’m writing this from the line (and then seat) for the closing session. My highlights from the past few days were the “Making an Impact: A Spotlight on Scholastic Picture Books” luncheon and the Newbery-Caldecott-Legacy dinner – and not just because I love food! At the first, it was fascinating to learn about the making of On the Tip of a Wave: How Ai Weiwei’s Art Is Changing the Tide<\/em> by Joanna Ho and C\u00e1tia Chien (pictured below). I’m sad to say it doesn’t come out until 10\/31, but still – mark your calendars. It is an impactful and relevant (not to mention beautifully and artfully crafted) book and one of my favorites from the entire conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another book discussed was I Am My Ancestors’ Wildest Dreams<\/em> by Tanisia Moore and illustrated by Robert Paul Jr. (pictured below). It was a very powerful, personal presentation. Not pictured were the other books discussed, which are also noteworthy – When You Can Swim<\/em> by Jack Wong and When Rubin Plays<\/em> by Gracey Zhang. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, during the Newbery-Caldecott-Legacy Banquet, I sat behind the We Need Diverse Books<\/a> table. The presentations were very heartwarming<\/a>, as was noticing that Minh L\u00ea gave his jacket to Ellen Oh when the air conditioning kicked up! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since her time as chair of the 2022 Notable Children\u2019s Books Committee was virtual (but still amazing) she is very excited to see ALSC colleagues and friends in person again. She\u2019s looking forward to the Newbery-Caldecott-Legacy Banquet<\/a> and the closing session by Amanda Gorman and Christian Robinson<\/a>! Even though she lives in Illinois she still *relishes* the chance to eat Chicago-style hot dogs while in the city and will also be snacking on some Garrett\u2019s popcorn!
