{"id":27037,"date":"2022-03-30T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T04:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=27037"},"modified":"2022-03-27T21:10:09","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T01:10:09","slug":"get-ready-for-national-poetry-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2022\/03\/get-ready-for-national-poetry-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Ready for National Poetry Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">April is National Poetry Month!&nbsp; How are you going to celebrate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My library system allows cardholders to sign up for daily poems sent to their email, along with a prompt for those interested in creating their own poetry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love reading the daily poem.&nbsp; I admit I have not yet tried my hand at writing.&nbsp; Maybe if I have a day off in April\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, I have always done a BIG display of poetry books in the children\u2019s area.&nbsp; What I find most interesting is that while they don\u2019t circulate a ton throughout the year, I can barely keep them in stock while putting out the display.&nbsp; A reminder, perhaps, to consider them in any themed display you create.&nbsp; When people see poetry books, at least at my branch, they MOVE!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/imagesa.btol.com\/ContentCafe\/Jacket.aspx?UserID=ContentCafeClient&amp;Password=Client&amp;Return=T&amp;Type=L&amp;Value=9780061965258\" alt=\"\" width=\"-273\" height=\"-357\" \/><figcaption>&#8220;Sick&#8221; by Shel Silverstein can be found here!  Image courtesy of Cuyahoga County Public Library&#8217;s website. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I cannot think of children and poetry without thinking of Shel Silverstein.&nbsp; My favorite is \u201cSick,\u201d which begins, \u201c&#8221;I cannot go to school today,&#8221;\/Said little Peggy Ann McKay.\u201d&nbsp; And it ends with the best punch line I will not ruin, if you are not familiar with it.&nbsp; Instead, I will link to the poem <a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/poem\/sick\">here<\/a>.&nbsp; Silverstein still flies off the shelf today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other customer favorites are Charles R. Smith, Jr.\u2019s photographic interpretation of Langston Hughes\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/My-People\/Langston-Hughes\/9781416935407\">\u201cMy People,\u201d<\/a> Amy Krause Rosenthal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/the-wonder-book-amy-krouse-rosenthal?variant=33007525986338\">\u201cThe Wonder Book,\u201d<\/a> and anything by Jack Prelutsky.&nbsp; I\u2019m also a huge fan of April Pulley Sayre, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Rah-Rah-Radishes!\/April-Pulley-Sayre\/9781534459878\">\u201cRah, Rah Radishes\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Bloom-Boom!\/April-Pulley-Sayre\/9781481494724\">\u201cBloom Boom.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t forget to highlight books in verse for children, a favorite for reluctant readers who are encouraged by white space.&nbsp; Whether it be one of Kwame Alexander\u2019s sports novels (like <a href=\"https:\/\/kwamealexander.com\/product\/f\/BOOKS\/10\">\u201cThe Crossover\u201d),<\/a> Jasmine Warga\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/jasminewarga.com\/other-words-for-home\">Other Words for Home<\/a>,\u201d or Lisa Fipps\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/authorlisafipps.com\/books\/starfish\/\">\u201cStarfish,\u201d<\/a> these books use imagery and rhythm to engage readers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How will you celebrate this April?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This post addresses the core competency of IV.
