Even if you aren\u2019t starting your own committee, I want to share valuable information for any library staff working with children. There\u2019s too much juicy goodness to cover in one blog post, but here are some takeaways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>All book evaluation committees \u2013 local and national, big and small \u2013 have a significant role and responsibility. We influence publishers, librarians, and kids with our choices.<\/li><li>Choose titles that contain realistic, culturally accurate, and nuanced character depictions.<\/li><li>Question the status quo: early librarians centered collections on books with Euro-American and Christian worldviews, which were devoid of non-white stories and promoted stereotypes of BIPOC people. Let\u2019s be the change!<\/li><li>Be open minded and willing to examine your own biases. Be receptive to others\u2019 perspectives, and allow your mind to be swayed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Language is powerful. Be aware of antagonist language, such as \u201cfighting\u201d for our favorite books. We aren\u2019t literally in a battle!<\/li><li>Promote titles within your collections that patrons may overlook.<\/li><li>There are books that get a hard no. Titles with transphobic, homophobic, ableist, sexist, or racist imagery &amp; messages do not belong on our lists<\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all want a strong, culturally competent collection and a compassionate, culturally competent community of readers (and staff!). Let\u2019s continue to reimagine children\u2019s librarianship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Conference Blogger <strong>Katie Clausen<\/strong> is the Early Literacy Services Manager at Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, IL.
