Prince Harry has written the foreword to Hospital on the Hill<\/em><\/a>, an upcoming book by author Chris Connaughton.\u00a0 The book reportedly tells the story of a young person whose parent worked\u2014and died\u2014on the frontlines of a hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0 The royal\u2019s introduction discusses the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, when he was 12 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The article reminded me of the pandemic-themed picture books I\u2019ve seen over the past year.  The first ones published focused on viruses, handwashing and mask-wearing, often comparing the latter to being a superhero.  However, in recent months, a selection of books has been published that are, perhaps, more subtle about how the lives of little ones have changed over the past year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside, Inside <\/em>by LeUyen Pham<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

LeUyen Pham\u2019s Outside Inside<\/em><\/a> is a wonderful example of this shift.\u00a0 The book is not about the science of the pandemic\u2014the word virus is never even mentioned.\u00a0 Instead, it talks about how most of the world went inside because \u201cit was the right thing to do.\u201d It shows essential workers on the job.\u00a0 It shows families inside playing games.\u00a0 It honors sacrifice and loss as well as the quality family time gained by this most unusual season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the People Stayed Home <\/em>by Kitty O’Meara<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

And the People Stayed Home by Kitty O\u2019Meara<\/a><\/em> furthers this idea.\u00a0 The story, based on a poem O\u2019Meara wrote that went viral on the internet, starts in the middle of the pandemic\u2014the middle of a thought.\u00a0 It imagines people slowing down, and the earth slowing down and healing because of it.\u00a0 The book also moves beyond<\/em> the pandemic, imagining a time when people can safely get back together, mourn losses, and make better choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the worldwide nature of the coronavirus pandemic is stressed in Windows by Patrick Guest,<\/a><\/em> a medical worker who had to isolate from his family due to his son having elevated risk factors.\u00a0 Children from windows throughout the world voice the tale that proves we are all looking out\u2026together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
