The summer of 2020 is one for the books, with librarians nationwide facing more challenges than ever before. In addition to planning around uncertain re-openings and operations, libraries are also working to promote the importance of summer reading as “summer slide” academic regression compounds into COVID Slide, a term for the months-long learning loss due to extended school closures. To help parents and caregivers support their kids during this time, Highlights<\/a> and Baker & Taylor<\/a> have launched the Highlights Activity Bingo reading program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Modeled after Highlights\u2019 Highlights@Home initiative, which was created to support families during the COVID-19 stay-at-home period, Highlights Activity Bingo provides library systems with engaging and flexible children\u2019s programming, allowing them to continue serving their communities while navigating whatever comes next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Highlights Activity Bingo program includes weekly themed Bingo cards which combine more than 190 fiction and nonfiction e-books with engaging activities from Highlights. The Bingo cards are available in digital and printable format and are designed to reinforce reading skills and social-emotional development for kids ages 2-12. The cards provide links to downloadable puzzles, recipes, creative indoor and outdoor activities, and ways to inspire kindness. The reading program is designed to offer the flexibility and adaptability that libraries need in order to provide their crucial summer programming, no matter their set up or operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights and Baker & Taylor each have a long history of championing summer learning and reading, and both companies value the significance of library summer reading programs in engaging and supporting young readers. Teaming up allows them to pool resources and impact even more libraries and families, by providing unique, fun learning resources to inspire as many children as possible to keep reading throughout the summer \u2013 whether they’re still at home or able to visit their local libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
