An intimidating but important skill set for a children&#8217;s librarian is coding. I&#8217;m here with tips on how to teach yourself coding.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>You don&#8217;t need to be an expert.\u00a0<\/strong>Coding is an intimidating buzzword. With the large amount of resources available, and enthusiasm and knowledge of children, you don&#8217;t need to be an expert to learn coding or teach a coding class. Kids can be available to help one another and finding answers is part of the challenge. Oftentimes what children need is a strong facilitator to point them in the direction of different resources and help kids navigate everything out there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Go through a quality online tutorial.<\/strong> Two of my favorite guides are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helloruby.com\/educators\">Hello Ruby educators guide<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/techdevguide.withgoogle.com\/\">Grow Your Technical Skills with Google Modules.<\/a>\u00a0Taking yourself step-by-step through these guides can give you an important foundational knowledge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do the activities yourself.\u00a0<\/strong>There can be so many books, articles and explanations out there- but learning by doing is the best in this situation. Try different <a href=\"https:\/\/hourofcode.com\/us\">Hour of Code<\/a>\u00a0activities for yourself, see if you can get out of a <a href=\"https:\/\/kidsactivitiesblog.com\/137828\/digital-escape-rooms\/\">digital escape room<\/a> and do a <a href=\"https:\/\/csfirst.withgoogle.com\/s\/en\/home?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=20200116-CS-First-always-on-cpc--all-all-&amp;src=cpc-google-20200116-CS-First-always-on-cpc--all-all-&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwhOD0BRAQEiwAK7JHmF9jq5cuu26uP59EkjwXMiYD419T0veqjzf1eDFEv6_jBhGp9atdFRoC7ngQAvD_BwE\">CS First Club<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Explore different formats.<\/strong> There&#8217;s a lot of different definitions and types of coding out there, so take a some time to explore different options. See what might be best for yourself or different age groups from <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/blockly\">Blockly<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/\">Scratch<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2015\/05\/more-coding-for-kids-html\/\">HTML<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.javascript.com\/\">JavaScript<\/a> and beyond.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask questions.<\/strong> Don&#8217;t be afraid to reach out to your professional networks. Post a Tweet or ask the creators of different resources for advice.
