Dear ALSC Members and Friends,<\/p>\n

I’m thinking of you today and every day and wondering how you are doing and hoping that you, your family and friends are safe and healthy.<\/p>\n

It seems so long since I last communicated.\u00a0 So much has changed, yet it seems in some ways we are in the same place.\u00a0 An online news commentator a few days ago said that March was the longest year we had ever had in a month.\u00a0 I’m sure it seems that way for many of you as well.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As you are aware, the ALA Annual conference in Chicago has been cancelled as an in-person event.\u00a0 If you had already registered you have received a message asking if you would like to keep your registration for the Annual Conference as a virtual event, which also includes registration for the January Midwinter in Indianapolis.\u00a0 At this time, we don’t know what the virtual event will look like or what it will include.\u00a0 We are waiting for information from ALA before we are able to plan in detail what events\/programs we will be able to present.\u00a0 We are committed to communicating ALSC’s plans to each of you just as soon as we have details.<\/p>\n

A bright spot of news is that ALSC will be launching the Virtual Storytime Services Resource Guide<\/a> very soon.\u00a0 This evolving resource is being developed in collaboration with Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy (CLEL), the Association for Library Service to Children, and many other professionals in the field. I’m hoping many of you will use the online form to share resources that will help librarians across the country.<\/p>\n

Work as we know it is changing and ALSC and our members are fortunate in that we have developed a robust Mentorship program as well as recently finalized work on the committee realignment in order to increase virtual participation.\u00a0 We realize there have been detractors to online work, but right now virtual competence has been critically important to almost everyone’s work, be that for their committee and\/or for their jobs.\u00a0 I’m proud of our association and members for the visionary work it has done and will continue to do.\u00a0 Because of our members and our ability to try new things many libraries are now offering online storytimes.\u00a0 The important thing right now is that we have these conversations about how we provide service to and for our families.\u00a0 There is no right or wrong answer; it’s different for every library.<\/p>\n
