In an effort to help ALSC members make an informed decision before they vote, this afternoon\u2019s blog post consists of statements from the two candidates standing for election as the ALSC Division Councilor.<\/p>\n

Eric Gomez <\/strong>is standing for election as an ALSC Division Councilor candidate.<\/p>\n

I have been involved with ALSC for the past 14 years, having been a member on the Newbery, Sibert, and on the standing membership and Quick Lists committees\u2019.\u00a0 I have worked at the Broward County Libraries Division for the last 14 years as a Youth Services Supervisor and work currently at the Tyrone Bryant Branch Library in Fort Lauderdale, FL as the Community Library Manager.\u00a0 If elected, as ALSC Division Councilor, I will bring my professional experience to advocate for meaningful and engaging conversations among the ALSC membership that will help enrich the lives of children through early literacy, STEAM programming and overall children\u2019s library services.\u00a0 As you are aware, ALA and ALSC are also changing the operational working dynamics to serve the needs of our diverse membership and I am committed to this endeavor wholeheartedly.\u00a0 I am a firm believer in bringing the community, youth and partners together to create dynamic learning environment in libraries through collaborative partnerships.\u00a0 Those are the biggest change agents in confronting social inequalities so that we all together collectively can create a better future through libraries for children.<\/p>\n

I am honored to stand as a candidate for ALSC Councilor. I am an experienced librarian with over 25 years of experience. I value the professional development and leaderships skills I have gained as a longtime, active ALA member. Along the way, I have served on numerous committees for both ALSC and YALSA including a recent term on ALSC Notables. I gained Board experience as a YALSA board member and served as YALSA President in 2010. As a member of both YALSA and ALSC, I think it is important for both divisions to work closely together so that our voices are heard through these changes, which will have a big impact on both organizations.<\/p>\n

As a previous ALA Council member, I bring the experience of serving two terms as an At-Large Council Representative. That experience will be helpful as ALA treads new waters with the new \u201cReimagined ALA\u201d. Big changes are never easy and our membership will have many questions. As an experienced leader, I will do my best to ensure that ALSC members stay informed of all changes coming and that their questions, concerns and suggestions are communicated. Please vote for me in the upcoming ALA Elections! But more importantly, Please VOTE period. Our association needs your voice!<\/p>\n

The polls will open at 9 a.m. Central time on Monday, March 9 and will close on Wednesday, April 1 at 11:59 p.m. To be eligible to vote, individuals must be members in good standing as of January 31, 2020.<\/p>\n
