November 1st<\/sup> is National Author\u2019s Day, and what better way to celebrate than to hype some amazing authors you \u2013 and your patrons \u2013 should definitely be reading? Much like my August post<\/a>, which focused on humorous book recommendations, I\u2019ve asked some of the best librarians I know to weigh in. The question I posed: If you could only read children’s books by one author for an entire year, who would it be and why? All answers are in the words of the librarians themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d choose Grace Lin<\/a>. I love the fairy tale quality to much of her work, her incredible range of being both a writer and an illustrator, and how she has an extensive catalog to choose from, starting with picture books and going all the way up to middle grade.\u201d \u2013 Allison, NY<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis does not define me but I\u2019m going to say Philip Pullman<\/a> because I could re-read the His Dark Materials <\/em>trilogy over and over and over again and still find something new. Plus, the HBO series is coming out, and the prequels\/sequels, so honestly it\u2019s perfect timing. If you have not read them then go on your library\u2019s catalog and grab book one right after reading this!\u201d \u2013 Anna, CT<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHands down I would read Shannon Hale<\/a>. I love ALL of her books, and they cover a wide emotional range so it would be an entertaining year.\u201d \u2013 Catherine, CT<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d have to go with Jacqueline Woodson<\/a>; she just has such a wealth of great books to choose from. Brown Girl Dreaming <\/em>is one of my favorites, but I also love Pecan Pie Baby <\/em>\u2013 especially for storytimes.\u201d \u2013 Jackie, OH<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMo Willems<\/a>. Mostly because of the funny but also because of the variety of levels he writes for; he covers all bases.\u201d \u2013 Jess, NY<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was a tough one for me \u2013 I know, it was MY question \u2013 but I finally settled on Roshani Chokshi<\/a>. I\u2019m a huge fan of her lyrical writing style (A Crown of Wishes<\/em> is a particular favorite), but I haven\u2019t gotten around to reading Aru Shah yet.\u201d \u2013 Kate, CT<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI spent a lot of time thinking about this question, and I just really love Anna Meriano<\/a>\u2019s Love Sugar Magic <\/em>middle-grade series. It\u2019s got a girl discovering her magic, sisters, lots of awesome women, plus a bakery. I\u2019d be happy to read them over and over again.\u201d \u2013 Kristin, TX<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cN.H. Senzai<\/a>. I love how she writes immigrant and refugee stories; it\u2019s an interesting perspective that you don\u2019t get a lot of in children\u2019s literature.\u201d \u2013 Ryan, NY<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would read Mac Barnett<\/a> for a whole year because his picture book offerings are clever, strange and whimsical, and quite brilliantly illustrated by a wide range of illustrators. His chapter book series, Mac B., Kid Spy <\/em>is equally as witty and delightful\u2026 plus it features the Queen of England\u2019s corgis!\u201d \u2013 Samantha, CT<\/p>\n\n\n\n
