The past sixth months, I\u2019ve been finding my programming \u201clegs\u201d at a new branch.\u00a0 With my team\u2019s help, we had some wildly successful summer school age programs, but, with school now back in session, I wanted to offer some additional programming for our younger friends.<\/p>\n

A colleague of mine from Cuyahoga County Public Library\u2019s Fairview Park Branch, Jennifer Haag, had presented on Preschool STEAM at an Ohio Library Council Chapter Conference a few years ago.\u00a0 It was a wonderful presentation, offering a full year of monthly program plans.\u00a0 So, to dip my toes in the water, I chose ONE of her programs\u2014October\u2014to try this year.<\/p>\n

Quite simply\u2014it was a lot of fun.<\/p>\n

The families and staff performed all the science experiments together, and then participants had the opportunity to spend time at Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math stations throughout the room.<\/p>\n

Dissolving candy corn and pumpkin Peeps<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Which liquids will dissolve candy corn and peeps<\/a>\u2014water, hot water, seltzer, vegetable oil, or vinegar?\u00a0 You\u2019ll have to try yourself to see, but I\u2019ll say that peeps may survive the apocalypse!\u00a0 We lifted the M\u2019s off M&M\u2019s<\/a> (a fun and easy project).\u00a0 And the most visually fun experiment\u2014making Skittles rainbows<\/a>!\u00a0 I bought cheap plastic plates from the dollar store.\u00a0 Kids make patterns with Skittles around the edge, and then an adult pours warm waters into the center of the plate.\u00a0 Lots of excitement over this project!\u00a0 Finally, we ended this segment with me (an adult) making two pumpkin-canos<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One girl wanted a special pattern.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Our littlest participant loved the iPad!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Then they were free to explore. The \u201cTechnology Table\u201d featured making creepy music on iPads.\u00a0 Our youngest participant loved pounding on the keys and making noise.\u00a0 Building with gum drops, candy corn, spaghetti and toothpicks proved to be a popular \u201cEngineering Table.\u201d\u00a0 Families made their own paper jack o\u2019lanterns with pre-cut pumpkins and face parts (thanks, Cricut!) for the \u201cArt Table.\u201d\u00a0 And the \u201cMath Table\u201d went back to candy corn.\u00a0 Kids could pick them out of sensory bins filled with beans to sort, count, and make shapes.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d encourage you to try a Preschool STEAM program.\u00a0 Whole families came, and kids of all ages got into the various projects.\u00a0 There really was something for everyone.<\/p>\n
