{"id":21798,"date":"2019-10-03T00:01:46","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T04:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=21798"},"modified":"2025-05-09T12:00:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T16:00:23","slug":"young-peoples-poet-laureate-naomi-shihab-nye-2019-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2019\/10\/young-peoples-poet-laureate-naomi-shihab-nye-2019-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Young People\u2019s Poet Laureate Naomi Shihab Nye, 2019 \u2013 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In September, I tried my best to magically transport myself to Seattle to hear Young People\u2019s Poet Laureate, Naomi Shihab Nye speak.\u00a0 Part of the Seattle Arts &amp; Lectures series, I was hoping to hear about Nye\u2019s new book\u00a0<em>The Tiny Journalist<\/em>, her past teen and children\u2019s poetry books and her life.\u00a0 The event described her work: \u201cDrawing on her Palestinian-American heritage, the cultural diversity of her home in Texas and her experiences traveling in Asia, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Middle East, Nye gives voice to her experience as an Arab-American through poems about heritage and peace that overflow with a humanitarian spirit.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I started sharing her poems in the early 2000\u2019s when I was a Young Adult Librarian at New York Public Library.\u00a0 I remember sharing\u00a0<em>19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East<\/em>, a finalist for the 2002 National Book Awards, Young People\u2019s Literature and an ALA Notable Book Award in 2003.\u00a0 It was and still is one of the most important poetry books for teens and families to read aloud together.\u00a0 With her new role as Young People\u2019s Poet Laureate, my hope is librarians, teachers and students will share her poetry now more than ever.<\/p>\n<p>You can explore videos, hear her poems, discover a new poetry article and more at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/learn\/young-peoples-poet-laureate\">www.poetryfoundation.org<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Explore her \u201cBook Picks\u201d where she will recommend a new poetry book each month.\u00a0 Her October Pick is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pomelobooks.com\/\">Here We Go: A Poetry Friday Power Book<\/a>\u00a0Edited by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite ways to promote and introduce children\/teachers\/librarians to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/learn\/young-peoples-poet-laureate\">Young People&#8217;s Poet Laureate &#8211; Naomi Shihab Nye.<\/a> <span style=\"float: none;background-color: #ffffff;color: #303231;font-family: 'Lato',sans-serif;font-size: 14px;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;font-weight: 400;letter-spacing: normal;text-align: left;text-decoration: none;text-indent: 0px\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read aloud <a href=\"https:\/\/dpl.bibliocommons.com\/item\/show\/1656080094\">&#8220;Map of Fun&#8221;<\/a> at your next storytime.\u00a0 Make your own daily map with illustrations and favorite things to do outside.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The river is famous to the fish.&#8221; Who do you want to be famous to? Read <a href=\"https:\/\/dpl.bibliocommons.com\/item\/show\/1597478094\">&#8220;Famous<\/a>&#8221; and share your own famous connections at home, outside and in the classroom.<\/li>\n<li>Create a YPPL book display in your library!
