Today, I attended ALSC 101, and let me tell you, this was the place to be! ALSC 101 is a session that answers questions from new and prospective ALSC members and helps members to get the most out of the organization. I\u2019m part of the Membership Committee which planned ALSC 101, so admittedly, I am a bit biased, but I have to say, it was a really awesome session!<\/p>\n
I especially loved the panel discussion, which featured a wide range of ALSC members with differing levels of experience in the organization. ALSC\u2019s award and selection committees are fantastic, and in fact, many of the ALSC members who participated today had experience serving on these committees. But while they said that they had a wonderful time, when asked what their best ALSC experience has been, they focused on the work that they\u2019ve done while serving on task forces and process committees.<\/p>\n
Task forces and process committees provide invaluable hands-on professional development experience for our members. They offer members an opportunity to get to know other children\u2019 librarians in the field and work together on something meaningful. The knowledge and experience gained through these committees helps us to be even better librarians and can help us gain professional recognition and advancement. It\u2019s no wonder that our panel members love these committees so much!<\/p>\n
In addition to task forces and process committees, ALSC panel members also emphasized that there are so many resources available to our members. There are lots of ways to for members to make the most of their membership, including watching webinars, reading the ALSC blog, and using ALSC toolkits.<\/p>\n
The big take-away from this session is that we are here for you. If you have any questions or are confused, please let us know. If we don’t know the answer, we will find someone who does.
