It\u2019s been two-and-a-half weeks since I started at a new library.<\/p>\n
It was a lateral move to a branch in the same system.\u00a0 Same job description.\u00a0 It\u2019s even the first branch I ever worked at when I was a 16-year-old page, with a lot of the same staff.\u00a0 It\u2019s like coming home.<\/p>\n
But it\u2019s still new.\u00a0 And I\u2019m grappling with how to simultaneously hit the ground running and make logical and not impulsive changes.\u00a0 Changes that will actually<\/em> improve the library for customers and staff, and not just \u201cput my stamp on things.\u201d<\/p>\n I\u2019m still muddling through, but I thought mentioning a few things that seem to be working, and have worked for me before, would be worthwhile.<\/p>\n First, I recommend sitting back and watching for some time, and asking questions.\u00a0 See how people approach the collection.\u00a0 See how attendance is at programs.\u00a0 See how fellow staff (or your staff members, if you are a supervisor) feel about things\u2014are they happy?\u00a0 Do they have suggestions for changes?\u00a0 Talk to the pages\u2014they often can tell you a lot about what is popular, what doesn\u2019t move, what changes they would make in the collection.<\/p>\n Meet your Friends group. See what their interests are.<\/p>\n If something is minor but glaring to you, change it.\u00a0 It was obvious that my new comic collection needed to be weeded.\u00a0 That was a quick, easy fix that looked aesthetically pleasing almost immediately.<\/p>\n Tackle one thing at a time.\u00a0 Ask for input.\u00a0 And enjoy your new digs!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" It\u2019s been two-and-a-half weeks since I started at a new library.
