Team Up to Read<\/a>, Brooklyn Public Library\u2019s new literacy program for kids ages 5-9 and their caregivers and families, will launch a summer series during the library\u2019s 2019 Summer Reading Program: A Universe of Stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Children and their caregivers and families will enjoy an interactive read-aloud book followed by an activity that helps reinforce literacy techniques \u2014 like using puppets to help improve fluency, or drawing a comic strip to demonstrate the parts of a story.  Programs are designed to inspire children and their adults to work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three sessions will be featured this summer. The first will inspire children to become curious readers, as they think about who they are as readers and what questions they have about what they are reading.  Books that work well with this unit have a strong clear plot, a bit of mystery or intrigue or a wordless picture book such as Draw!<\/em> by Ra\u00fal Col\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second will show how interactive storytelling can be used to develop techniques to master speed, accuracy and expression while reading aloud.  Books with strong characters and story such as Zomo the Rabbit <\/em>by Gerald McDermott work well with this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third session will explain how young readers can build comprehension stills by connecting stories to their personal experiences and knowledge.  Stories with a strong emotional character experience such as Jabari Jumps<\/em> by Gaia Cornwall are ideal for this exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 2018 inaugural year of Team Up to Read, which was generously supported by the Altman Foundation, we were delighted when children who attended the program reported learning that books are fun and how to find a just-right book. Parents reported that their children showed huge improvements in their reading skills, and that their children enjoy reading more than ever.  This was perhaps the best news ever, because ultimately our goal in helping kids to become stronger readers is to inspire a love of reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
