Spring has sprung and with it comes extra special programming celebrating D\u00eda!<\/p>\n

D\u00eda is incorporated year-round by emphasizing the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds with many libraries commemorating by planning special events around the end of April.<\/p>\n

El d\u00eda de los ni\u00f1os\/El d\u00eda de los libros (Children’s Day\/Book Day) is a celebration of children, families, and books observed on April 30.<\/p>\n

According to the official D\u00eda website<\/a>, \u201cAs celebrated by libraries and librarians, D\u00eda is an enhancement of Children\u2019s Day, a celebration which took hold in 1925 following the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children.\u201d In 1996 author and poet Pat Mora proposed linking Children\u2019s Day with literacy and bilingualism to create a new holiday: El d\u00eda de los ni\u00f1os\/El d\u00eda de los libros. With the help of REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and\u00a0Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, the holiday was first celebrated on April 30, 1997. ALA formalized their support in 2001.<\/p>\n
