{"id":20670,"date":"2019-04-09T12:01:09","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T16:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=20670"},"modified":"2019-03-31T22:21:56","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T02:21:56","slug":"alsc-on-the-road-the-alsc-road-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/alsc-on-the-road-the-alsc-road-show\/","title":{"rendered":"ALSC On The Road &#8211; The ALSC Road Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe you\u2019ve heard about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/member-center\/roadshow\">ALSC\u2019s Road Show<\/a>\u2026but in case you haven\u2019t, it\u2019s this cool opportunity where any ALSC members can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailmeform.com\/builder\/form\/cS52FcZs4yh\">apply for funds<\/a> or material to spread the joy of our professional organization.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s a way to reach new possible members and to continue the networking that happens at conferences to your backyard in the way that makes the most sense.\u00a0 You can ask for funds to support a networking event or pay for a conference booth and\/or ask for printed materials\u2026whichever you prefer.\u00a0 The application takes a mere five minutes to fill out.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bOamLKAb-g8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When I first heard about the Road Show I had trouble imagining how it might be useful\u2014I didn\u2019t get all the possibilities until I actually read the fabulous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2018\/05\/take-alsc-on-a-roadshow-represent-alsc-at-a-local-event\/\">blogpost<\/a> written by a fellow Membership Committee Member last year (d\u2019oh-head slap) .\u00a0 Since then, I\u2019ve had tons of ideas on how you could use the program.\u00a0 Here are a few Choose Your Own Adventure style ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You go to a state conference where there might be potential members and ask for funding for booth space and materials; you staff the booth as you can (ideally with some friends), and represent.<\/li>\n<li>You go to a state conference and plan a social gathering for children\u2019s librarians who are members (and non-members of ALSC) to network and talk about the organization.<\/li>\n<li>You teach at an MLIS programs and want ALSC materials to give to your class when you talk about Award-Winning Books or professional organizations.<\/li>\n<li>You live in an urban area where a lot of ALSC members live and want to organize a Meet Up to network; ALSC can reimburse you for appetizers.<\/li>\n<li>You live in a rural area and you want to organize an idea swap for summer reading with nearby libraries to see if there are opportunities to cost share and share performers; you can ask ALSC for funds for snacks and promote the organization.<\/li>\n<li>You are booktalking diverse books and talking about time on a committee and you want any copies of booklists ALSC has preprinted that promote the organization (this actually happened!)<\/li>\n<li>You want to organize a training to support a core ALSC value and make it available to children\u2019s librarians regionally (I don\u2019t know if this will work, but, hey, why not apply?) and need supplemental funds<\/li>\n<li>You are a state librarian and you want to organize a Mock Caldecott for children\u2019s librarians in your state and need financial support to help with the event.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is only a handful of the ideas out there\u2026I\u2019m sure some of you have great ideas.\u00a0 The point is, it\u2019s a great opportunity to localize ALSC and take ownership over networking while promoting the organization.\u00a0 Although funds are limited, in the last year, the ALSC office only received a few applications\u2014and it would be great to see wider involvement.<\/p>\n<p>How do you think you could utilize the Road Show Program?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Jennifer Knight wrote this post as a member of the ALSC Membership committee.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>This post addresses the following ALSC Core Competencies: VII Professionalism and Professional Development.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe you\u2019ve heard about ALSC\u2019s Road Show\u2026but in case you haven\u2019t, it\u2019s this cool opportunity where any ALSC members can apply for funds or material to spread the joy of our professional organization.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s a way to reach new possible members and to continue the networking that happens at conferences to your backyard in the way that makes the most sense.\u00a0 You can ask for funds to support a networking event or pay for a conference booth and\/or ask for printed materials\u2026whichever you prefer.\u00a0 The application takes a mere five minutes to fill out.
