Today&#8217;s meeting was no exception! <!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The program portion of this meeting featured educator and diversity advocate <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.antibiasleadersece.com\/debbie-leekeenan\/\">Debbie LeeKeenan<\/a> who spoke on the topic of &#8220;Anti-bias Education and Children&#8217;s Literature: Provoking Courageous Conversations.&#8221; It was a powerful, timely, and thought-provoking discussion which covered topics including<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Social justice education during changing and challenging times<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Anti-bias education<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Building frameworks for courageous conversations, and how we can find opportunities for teachable and learnable moments<\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The importance of choosing more authentic and culturally responsive books was discussed, including the need to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Work to unlearn stereotypes, not create them<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recognize that there are different experiences within every group<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Provide a range of books about differences, including differences in:<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">race<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ethnicity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">family structure<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">religion<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">class<\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of my biggest take-aways from this session was the importance of continuing to work to move beyond &#8220;either\/or&#8221; thinking and embrace complexity. We <strong>can<\/strong> talk with each other and with kids about visions for a better world, and empower each other by being open to discussions of inequality or unfairness that we see and by asking &#8220;What can we do to make it better?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This post addresses the ALSC Core Competencies of: I.
