Learn<\/a> is a school readiness program coordinated by Washington State\u2019s Child Care Resources. \u00a0Many children ages birth to 5 are not enrolled in formal early learning programs or licensed child care.\u00a0 \u00a0The purpose of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childcare.org\/ckfinder\/userfiles\/files\/Kaleidoscope_Play_%26_Learn_Description.pdf\">Kaleidoscope Play &amp; Learn<\/a> (KP&amp;L) is to work with family, friend and neighbor caregivers, and parents to provide support in preparing their children for success in school and life through quality early childhood experiences.\u00a0 The program consists of weekly, facilitated groups of 90 minutes or more.\u00a0 Each session begins with child-directed play and concludes with a coordinated large group activity.\u00a0 At the library the large group activity is story time, of course!\u00a0 Children and caregivers participate in open-ended, child-directed play, choosing from a variety of play centers, which together support the different areas of development (cognitive, social-emotional, language, fine-gross motor).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19722\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19722\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant-433x650.jpg 433w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant-60x90.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaleidoscope Play and Learn participant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every session includes intentional caregiver learning.\u00a0 The facilitators also provide intentional opportunities for caregiver leadership, whether it be by encouraging a caregiver to share a story or song or to welcome and engage new participants. \u00a0\u00a0Organizations providing KP&amp;L sessions commit to offering sessions in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/childcare.org\/ckfinder\/userfiles\/files\/KPL%20Guidelines%20revised%20September%202018.pdf\">Guidelines<\/a>.\u00a0 Child Care Resources also provides curriculum lessons on a variety of topics.\u00a0 (In fact, the early literacy lessons were created by myself and CiKeithia Pugh, the Early Learning Program Coordinator at Seattle Public Library based on the content of Every Child Ready to Read 2.)<\/p>\n<p>At the King County Library System, we provide sessions through a variety of partnerships.\u00a0 We have facilitators that we hire and contract with to provide sessions in English and Spanish. \u00a0As a formal partner, Child Care Resources provides the training for new facilitators.\u00a0 In addition, we partner with outside agencies, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/cisc-seattle.org\/\">CISC<\/a> who provide their own facilitators and materials, while we provide the space for those sessions at our libraries.\u00a0 This enables us to provide additional sessions in Chinese.\u00a0 Our library staff regularly visit all of the sessions to share a story time, in addition to information about library resources and programs with those in attendance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19723\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19723\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant3-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant3-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant3-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant3-433x650.jpg 433w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant3-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant3-60x90.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/KPL-Participant3.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A mother and daughter at Kaleidoscope Play and Learn group<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The power of the Kaleidoscope Play &amp;
