Dr. Smith is professor emerita from the University of South Florida. Over her long and storied  career, she has been a teacher, mentor, and inspiration to many children&#8217;s librarians and ALSC members and she is a nationally recognized expert in the field of multicultural children&#8217;s literature.  She has served on numerous ALSC committees, including Newbery and Caldecott, and has long been active on the Coretta Scott King Award Task Force. She has edited two editions of <em>The Coretta Scott King Awards Book: From Vision to Reality<\/em>, published by ALA Publications.
