Walking into any library\u2019s Youth Services Department should be a welcoming, engaging, and fun experience. At the Deerfield (IL) Public Library<\/a>, we are fortunate to have two large glass cases that house displays of our own making and, more importantly, artwork from our community. Our in-house displays promote just about every aspect of Youth Services, from books and other materials to programs and Summer Reading. Displays from the community send the strong message that our library is a proud partner with many local organizations.<\/p>\n

To make the community displays a reality, I reach out in August to each preschool director, elementary and middle school art teacher, our homeschool families, as well as two organizations that serve adults to schedule the displays. It currently works that each group can have a month in the display case, but in the past, we\u2019ve also hosted displays for two weeks in order to fit more groups into the schedule. In that initial email, I share the dimensions of the case, the dates that their display can be put up and taken down, and other specifics. One week before each display is to go up or needs to come down, I do email the contact again as a reminder. We love when students come by with their families to view their artwork. It\u2019s a proud moment for these artists, and we always make a big deal about their proverbial \u201c15 minutes of fame!\u201d<\/p>\n
